Uncovering the Importance of Parrotfish

The unsung hero of coral reefs

Analysis from over 3000 years of marine biology reveals that parrotfish play a vital role in reef eco-systems by removing the algae that damage the reefs. Using fossil records to analyse the natural state of reefs before human disturbance, conclusions show that if we want to protect corals we have to protect the brightly spotted parrotfish from overfishing.⠀
