Pick Up Patterns Inspire Simple Seats

Many recall fond childhood memories of playing pick-up-sticks, the simple game  of physical and mental skill in which a bundle of "sticks" are dropped as a loose bunch onto a table top, to form a random lattice. Each player in turn tries to remove a stick from the pile without disturbing any of the others.

Furniture designer Frederik Paulsen was inspired by this whimsical past time when creating a series of chairs in response to the word 'Mikado' – the European name for the game.

Working from an assortment of lengths of pine, he created several designs of intersecting wood, each configured into chairs that are as playful as the original game…
