Eye-Popping Eruption

A serendipitous fly-by of the Space Station in 2009 enabled an astronaut to capture the exact moment the Sarychev Volcano on Matua Island – part of the Russian Kuril Islands chain to the northeast of Japan – erupted. Bringing together all of the photography into a time lapse, we are able to get a detailed dimensional sense of the gas expelled by the volcano, a lucky glimpse into nature in full force.
